Hospital MiKS Medical Center: Integrated access, identity and security solution – Case Study

Salto’s access control solution has allowed us to improve hospital security management in a complex environment with a high daily flow of people. The system ensures that only authorized personnel have access to sensitive areas, reinforcing the protection of patients, professionals, and equipment. Furthermore, access traceability allows us to identify and manage incidents quickly, contributing to a safer and more efficient environment, streamlining processes, and improving efficiency.

Itziar GorrotxategiMarketing and Communication, MiKS Hospital
  • MiKS Hospital was founded with the aim of becoming a leading centre for research and teaching in the healthcare industry, sharing knowledge and clinical advances globally. In line with this philosophy, the design of its facilities had to incorporate a modern, secure, and reliable access control system, capable of supporting its innovative management model and offering a safe and efficient experience for professionals, researchers, patients and their visitors alike.

In addition, the hospital needed to guarantee a high level of protection in particularly sensitive areas – such as operating rooms, laboratories, the pharmacy, wards, and recovery rooms – where access control, hygiene, and security are critical aspects of daily activity.

In the words of Itziar Gorrotxategi, Head of Marketing and Communication at MiKS Hospital, the centre was looking for “a reliable, easy-to-integrate solution that could be managed centrally to meet the management challenges faced every day.” This led to the Salto being chosen for its robust technology, which was adaptable to the hospital's needs, and for its proven experience in complex environments such as this.

  • MiKS Hospital implemented an access control solution from Salto, together with its partner Electro Alavesa, based on the Salto Space platform and Salto SVN data-on-card technology.

In line with its commitment to innovation, comprehensive security, and medical excellence, MiKS Hospital entrusted Salto and its partner Electro Alavesa with the design and implementation of its access control system.

The installation allows control of all areas of the hospital – consultation rooms, operating rooms, laboratories, wards, and common areas – with real-time visibility of who accesses them, when and where, and customised profiles for workers, visitors and support services. Furthermore, it manages two facilities in different locations from a single system, without the need to change credentials, improving operations and security in a 24/7 environment. It also allows the configuration of customised access profiles for employees, researchers, visitors, and support services, ensuring more accurate management and reducing the risk of unauthorised access.

Another key aspect is the ability to manage two installations in different locations from the same system, without needing to change credentials. This ensures the mobility of staff and support services, maintaining controlled and secure access at all times, optimizing daily operations and the user experience.

The installation includes electronic locks, readers, cylinders, and devices at key points such as main entrances, perimeter entrances, the car park, evacuation routes, and critical areas of the building, all perfectly integrated into the architecture of the hospital and connected to its security systems. The system allows control of all areas – consultation rooms, operating rooms, laboratories, wards, and common areas – with real-time visibility and customised access profiles for employees, visitors, and support services.

Thanks to this solution, MiKS Hospital ensures a protected environment in critical areas such as operating rooms, laboratories, and wards, while facilitating the safe and efficient movement of patients, healthcare personnel, and researchers.

Key benefits

  • Enhanced security in sensitive areas: Only authorised personnel can access sensitive areas such as operating rooms, laboratories, and pharmacies.
  • Keyless and contactless access: Mobile devices, smart cards, or wristbands enable entry, eliminating the risk of unauthorised copying and facilitating a more hygienic environment.
  • Dynamic control adapted to profiles: Permissions are adjusted in real time according to the user, shift, and type of area, with the ability to generate temporary credentials, block areas of infection, and record each access.
  • Centralised management: total control of access in real time from a single platform.
  • Modular installation and complete access coverage: includes main entrances, perimeter entrances, car parks, evacuation routes, and critical internal points with wireless electronic locks, avoiding costly installations and allowing any door or additional access point to be enabled quickly as the hospital grows.
  • Multi-site management: control of two facilities from a single system without the need to change credentials
  • 24/7 uninterrupted operation: designed for a hospital with continuous activity, guaranteeing continuity and incident response.

The Salto management platform implemented at MiKS has enabled the integration of access control, time and attendance management, and intrusion alarm systems, covering all building access points and substantially improving operations and the experience at the medical centre.
